Tote bags One of my great aunts, Tante Gertrud, was known in the family as the Bag Lady. The title referred to the bags more than her elevated social status, which was quite acceptable in pre-war Munich. She said the bags were needed to facilitate her shopping habits, and she preferred to carry her wonderfully wrapped purchase in a chic but anonymous manner. She used to say that tote bags were her only concession to practicality, her raison d’être of staying sane. Another reason she never mentioned was her habit of enjoying a daily high tea in the lobby of Die Vier Jahreszeiten, while her limousine and driver waited at the curb. She took with her for contemplation a few of her daily purchases, together with her pair of mini-poodles, named North and South, both of which were lodged in tote bags of their own. Tante G. had a weakness for dogs with a sense of direction.
